On 25 October 1994, the Federal Ministry of Justice issued the Solingen Ordinance. The aim of this ordinance is to protect the indication of origin for cutlery from the city of Solingen. Accordingly, the name Solingen may only be used for cutlery if all essential stages of production have taken place within the Solingen industrial area.
